CHAPTER SIXTEEN

By the time I got off the rover back at the main research center, my back ached, and my nerves were frazzled. I had my tote bag with the hard drive on my lap. Something was up, and I wasn’t sure what. It was the not-knowing that was driving me nuts.

I had returned on the first rover, packed solid with almost all the staff. I ended up in a corner seat wedged next to an older staff member who had promptly fallen asleep.

I had spent the hours returning wracking my brain, but nothing was adding up. So by the time I disembarked and found Chloe, I was a bit on edge.

“Let’s get back to your room,” I said as I raced by her and Kraken.

“Whoa, Liz, what’s up?” Chloe said as she jogged to catch up. “Is everything okay? Are you mad at me?”

I shook my head. “No, not you. This just doesn’t feel right.” I was scanning the crowd, looking for Maggie so I could hand off my tote. She had been in a rover when the alarm went off and immediately returned to base, according to the talk I overheard, and she should have arrived a while ago. Luckily, rovers were able to reverse direction, even mid-trip, without needing to turn around.

“What doesn’t feel right? Do you think I’m being targeted?” Chloe grabbed onto my arm.

I slowed down and gathered my thoughts. “No, not that, exactly. There’s just a lot going on right now. I don’t think that evacuation was an accident.”

“It wasn’t? But on the rover they were saying that it happens all the time. Probably just a leak in the garbage system or someone spilled some chemicals.”

I shook my head. “I’m not buying it.”

The noise got louder, and there seemed to be far too many people for the rover that we had come in to explain. I finally spotted Maggie and waved to catch her eye before I turned back to Chloe.

“Can you go to your room and wait for me to meet you?”

“Can Kraken come?” she asked.

“Of course. I’ll be there soon.” I zigged through the crowd to reach Maggie.

When I finally reached her, she shushed me and signaled to follow her. After we turned a corner, I stepped up next to her. “Are there more people than just those that evacuated?

“A rover came in from the Volcano Research Center for the show tonight just a few minutes before you. A few of the researchers there wanted to see the show tonight. It was supposed to come in way earlier, but there was some debris on the line. I guess everyone is just keyed up after the delay and wanted to gossip in the hallways. A lot has been going on.”

She checked over her shoulder. “Did you get the hard drive?”

“Yes.”

She let out a sigh of relief. “I was so worried that you hadn’t had time.”

“I did it when I first got there, but I found something. The hard drive had a tracker on it.
